The National Highway Institute (NHI) announces that the following new training is available.

New Web-based Training! 141047 Local Public Agency Real Estate Acquisition

141047 Local Public Agency Real Estate Acquisition training is designed for those who are unfamiliar with Federal requirements when acquiring real property for Federally-assisted transportation projects. This training provides participants with a working knowledge of these Federal requirements when acquiring real property, including relocation guidance related to individuals and businesses.

Comprised of seven distinct learning modules, this self-paced Web-based training (WBT) provides an overview on real estate acquisition authority and the Uniform Relocation Assistance and Real Property Acquisition Policies Act of 1970 (Uniform Act) and related regulations. Additional modules include project development and administrative matters; valuation; acquisition and negotiation; relocation; and property management. This training also includes case studies, important resources, and suggestions for other companion courses. Failure to comply with the Uniform Act when acquiring real property for a Federally-funded transportation project can put this funding at risk and may lead to project delays.

The attached blueline contains additional details, or you can select the link above to view the course information on the NHI Web site. Please forward this e-mail to those you think would benefit from this new training.

Based on requests from local highway jurisdictions, LHTAC recently purchased a laser speed gun for the purpose of spot checking vehicular speed on roads. This will be helpful in determining whether an official speed study should be undertaken. While local highway jurisdictions can set speed limits on local roads by ordinance, it is required that speed study data is collected only after taking the LHTAC T2 Center’s speed study class, and that the study be reviewed by a licensed engineer.

Please contact LHTAC at (208) 344-0565 if you would like to use this instrument.

$12 million is available nationwide for 2012 in the Paul S. Sarbanes Transit in Parks Program. State, local, and tribal governments are eligible. Read details here.

Proposal deadline is September 28, 2012.

Program Purpose:

“The purpose of the program is to provide for the capital and planning costs of alternative transportation systems that will enhance the protection of national parks and Federal lands; increase the enjoyment of visitors’ experience by conserving natural, historical, and cultural resources; reduce congestion and pollution; improve visitor mobility and accessibility; enhance visitor experience; and ensure access to all, including persons with disabilities.

Since this is the final competition for funding under this program, FTA anticipates prioritizing projects that will be of independent utility and will not require future sources of funding to complete. Additionally, FTA anticipates prioritizing projects that are ready to begin implementation and can be completed within a reasonable timeframe.”
