2015 Innovation Honorable Mention
Buhl Highway District: Cement Spreader
Problem Statement:
There was a remaining 2112 ft. of a Cement Recycled Asphalt Base Stabilization (CRABS) project that was left unfinished because funding ran out. Buhl Highway District would have to come up with a way to finish the project on their own and spread cement at a metered rate.
Summary of Solution:
Crews found a 40 year old Buckeye Chip Spreader (push style) with great potential. Buhl Highway District’s Staff modified the existing equipment, and along with equipment loaned from Filer Highway District and Twin Falls Highway District, were able to complete the CRABS project.
Summary of Expenses:
Construction of Cement Spreader $7,500.00
Engineering $7,500.00
Labor $4,500.00
Equipment $8,000.00
Cement $11,000.00
CSS-1 Dilute $1,500.00
HMA Superpave $117,000.00
Total Cost: $157,000.00
Saving/Benefit of this Solution:
The creative in-house project saved approximately $75,000.00. The greatest benefit is having the ability to perform a CRABS project (large or small) in the future. Buhl Highway District wanted to thank Filer Highway District for reclaiming the R&D test strip with their Asphalt Zipper and also thank Twin Falls Highway District for the reclaiming/mixing of the CRABS project with
their Cat RM 500.
