Concrete Placing Company (CPC) began construction of Pine Road Bridge in July of 2017 under the management of Zane Reed. Early into the construction it was determined that the original design of the bridge structure which included two piers in the river channel was not constructible due to a large, solid obstruction just beneath the surface of the river bottom. Continuing the original design and attempting to address the obstruction could have delayed the road from re-opening for another year with significant construction and environmental issues.
The project team: Mountain Home Highway District, Glenns Ferry Highway District, HMH Engineering who provided Construction Engineering and Inspection, T-O Engineers who served as the Design Engineer, LHTAC, and CPC regrouped late in the summer of 2017 and determined the best course of action was to redesign Pine Road Bridge as a single span, steel structure.
Through a fever of project redesign, change order coordination, environmental permitting, and negotiations, the final redesign plans were stamped on April 5, 2018 which allowed CPC to start the redesigned bridge construction this spring.
The new design removed a significant amount of the in-water construction which reduced the impact to the stream and banks. This is another example of a local highway jurisdiction, LHTAC, Engineering Consultants, and Contractors pulling together to not only meet the original goal but improve on it. The original project was slated to be completed in the fall of 2018. Despite the obstacles and redesign, the bridge was able to meet the original construction schedule and was opened November 1, 2018.
