Registration is now live for the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) first-ever virtual offering of the Managing Floodways in the Pacific Northwest (PNW) Training, occurring in June 2021, hosted by FEMA Region 10, Floodplain Management and Insurance (FM&I) Branch. Please join us for this 2.5-hour training to learn about key information and methodologies for managing the floodway, including implementation of community floodway standards and higher standards, no-rise certifications, and floodway modifications.
We have now opened registration for all five training sessions. Through the following links, please register for one offering of the training offering that is most suitable to you. You are able to register for any training regardless of community type. While content will be tailored based on these categories, our biggest priority is ensuring accessibility and flexibility to allow as many communities as possible to benefit from the training.

What is Managing the Floodway and why is it important for communities?
It is important for communities to continue successful management of floodways throughout the Pacific Northwest by continuously staying educated on the floodway concept, its purpose, and floodway standards; understanding and adhering to regulatory requirements and methodologies to comply with no-rise certification requirements; and remaining or becoming more knowledgeable regarding various map change options for floodway modifications. Managing the floodway addresses how communities can successfully regulate development in watercourses and adjacent land areas to ensure that there are no increases in upstream flood elevations.
Who will benefit from this training?
This training is meant to be a refresher course for local officials and floodplain management staff, and will review and discuss policy updates that are important for all staff working with floodways, and is highly recommended for new staff. This training is geared toward non-engineers and those with a non-engineering background, although engineers are still welcome and encouraged to attend. Specifically, local officials and floodplain management staff who work with the following types of communities are encouraged to attend:
- Communities with programs that manage floodways and floodway standards.
- Communities with regulatory requirements of floodways and options to comply with no-rise certification requirements.
- Communities that desire to learn more about map change options for floodway modifications.
