Unpaved Road Survey

What: The following survey is to develop an in-depth understanding of gravel road safety issues (road closures) currently affecting the operational characteristics of people and goods in rural and tribal communities.

Why: Once unpaved roads’ safety issues are identified, the results of this research will potentially help those communities by enhancing the condition of the unpaved roads and increase their mobility.

Despite Obstacles Pine Road Bridge Opens on Schedule

Concrete Placing Company (CPC) began construction of Pine Road Bridge in July of 2017 under the management of Zane Reed. Early into the construction it was determined that the original design of the bridge structure which included two piers in the river channel was not constructible due to a large, solid obstruction just beneath the surface of the river bottom. Continuing the original design and attempting to address the obstruction could have delayed the road from re-opening for another year with significant construction and environmental issues. (more…)

September 2018 Quarterly Progress Report

The Local Highway Technical Assistance Council (LHTAC) provides an important linkage between Local Highway Jurisdictions (LHJs) and the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) in the utilization of Federal-aid highway funds available to the LHJs in Idaho. These quarterly progress reports include the status listing of current and upcoming LHTAC projects for each district.

The Political Signs Minefield

Political signs placed in public rights-of-way (ROW) are a minefield for road agencies. That minefield is even more treacherous after the 2015 case of Reed v. Town of Gilbert, Arizona (Reed).   The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has recently threatened to sue at least one Idaho road agency for removal of political signs based on the Reed case.
