Wildfires are burning near roads

Drivers should be prepared for fire conditions as they travel this summer.

Here’s some safe driving advice for this summer:

  • If there’s smoke, turn on your headlights and slow down
  • If you can’t see, carefully pull to the side of the road
  • If pulling a trailer, make sure nothing is dragging that can spark or overheat
  • Keep your vehicle well-maintained so it doesn’t overheat or get a flat tire
  • Don’t throw things out of your vehicle – like a lit cigarette
  • Carry an emergency kit with extra water, food and medications
  • Know your route and possible detours
  • Pay attention – you need to drive, not take pictures. Especially when there’s a fire

Mowing reduces roadside fire hazards

Manage roadside vegetation each spring and summer to reduce the fire load. Right now the grass along most highways is very dry, making it incredibly easy to spark a wildfire.

Administrative Code Rulemaking – Rules Governing Traffic Control Devices

Administrative Rule 39.03.41 – Rules Governing Traffic Control Devices – is being revised to reflect changes in Idaho law and in accordance with Executive Order no. 2019-02 – Red Tape reduction act.

The 2019 Idaho Legislature passed three laws (H 89, H 106, and H 208) that affect the use of traffic control devices.  H 89 memorialized US-20 as the Idaho Medal of Honor Highway.  H 106 requires drivers to move over for stopped police, emergency, tow truck, and highway incident response vehicles with flashing lights on two-lane highways or slow down and move over on multi-lane highways.  H 208 repealed the law that required Idaho highway and road agencies to install and maintain STOP signs at passive railroad-highway grade crossings.

In addition to law changes, existing laws that affect traffic control devices that have not previously been part of the administrative rule have been added.

The Idaho Transportation Department is hosting a negotiated rulemaking meeting on July 29, 2019 from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m.  Comments for the negotiated phase of rulemaking will be received through Wednesday, July 31, 2019.  Information about the meeting and ITD rulemaking can be viewed at https://itd.idaho.gov/rulemaking.
