Bridge Assistance for Locals

Idaho Local Bridge Bundling Grant

LHTAC hired a consultant which jointly prepared an application for a Competitive Highway Bridge Program (CHBP) grant request with assistance from ITD.  The request is for 8 critical local bridges in Southern Idaho, 4 bridges are in Southwest Idaho and 4 are in the Southeast.  Grouping the bridges geographically provides a centralized construction area so contractors can focus on the bridges by region and minimize impacts from mobility between project sites. This can lead to a reduced overall project cost and schedule.  Because these bridges are owned and maintained by LHJs, the bridges are purposely scattered across southern Idaho in various locations to avoid over extending any single local entity beyond their financial ability.

The bridges have reached their design life and are classified as being in poor condition.  LHTAC plans to use the innovative Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil-Integrated Bridge System (GRS-IBS) technology to successfully implement this project which will allow a project to be built in weeks instead of months, due to the ease of construction and the use of readily available materials and equipment.  The total estimate for this project is $9,426,000 of which $8,634,216 is requested in federal assistance through this CHBP grant.

Bridge Technical Assistance

LHTAC has provided technical assistance to LHJs by analyzing the current condition of their bridge inventory.  In close collaboration with the ITD Bridge Section, we have provided recommendations for rehabilitation or replacement on local load posted and structurally deficient structures.  Using this information, we have assisted LHJs as they prioritize which structures to rehabilitate with their local funds and which bridges they should submit Federal-aid applications for replacement.  The bridges they can rehabilitate can often be accomplished with minor engineering and their own forces.  LHTAC’s technical assistance helps locals address the looming local bridge crisis.

Officials celebrate Ella Ave. project

October 04, 2018 at 5:00 am | By MARY MALONE Staff writer for Bonner County Daily Bee

SANDPOINT — The Ella Avenue rehabilitation project recently finished on time and well under budget, prompting city officials to continue improvements on the stretch of road between Pine and Chestnut streets.

“We are really proud of our team,” said City Administrator Jennifer Stapleton. “This was a project that we needed to pull off in a tight timeline, which we knew we could do, but some of our new management approaches have led to us really being able to get things done in a tight timeline and really get costs under control. So we are super proud of that.” (more…)
